Nick’s son, Noah, was born prematurely and, after numerous complications, died aged 19 days old. Nick talks about the support he received from Child Bereavement UK, why he decided to raise funds for the charity and the help he has received from the fundraising team.

Shortly after Noah’s funeral, our midwife referred us to Child Bereavement UK. Without knowing really what to expect, my wife and I attended our first session with a bereavement support practitioner. Over the coming weeks and months, Child Bereavement UK helped us find a way forward and start to deal with the grief that was clouding our ability to live any sort of normal life.

Whilst we will always be different people as a result of losing Noah, I hope that in some ways we are better people and better parents to our two other children. As part of this I wanted to give something back to the charity.

Without much skill or ability, I have now run four London marathons to raise funds for Child Bereavement UK. I’m no great athlete but the challenge allows me plenty of time to reflect, appreciate and leave a bit of a legacy that Noah couldn’t leave for himself.

Child Bereavement UK has been amazing in supporting me in the fundraising. They have always been available for advice, give loads of support during the training and, if I’m honest, also provide the best thing about running a marathon – the post-race massage!

If anyone is considering doing a challenge event for the charity, I’d say get stuck in! I’ve been amazed how supportive and generous people have been over the years and even though it requires some effort it is truly worthwhile.
