Jimmy XI shares why he started using his musical talents to raise funds for Child Bereavement UK.

If you’re thinking of fundraising for Child Bereavement UK, simply reach out to them... they’ll help you achieve great things with your event and in turn for the charity.

XI Records, the independent record label I started, has been fundraising for Child Bereavement UK since September 2022. In 2022 XI released my song Lion King as the label’s first record; I wrote it in memory of a colleague I lost called Michael. Michael left behind three children aged six and under. Jacob, then six, had to become the man of the house much too prematurely.

I watched the Disney film Lion King and felt Jacob and Simba had similar challenges and the song came from there. Every penny the song has earned - be it streaming, downloads or purchases - has been donated to Child Bereavement UK.

I’ve written a couple of songs now about the feeling of grief including our latest release Price We Pay which I wrote following the passing of my Grandpa nearly two years ago. It simply helps me express how I’m feeling, while doing something I love - they say the best way to keep yourself happy is by doing things you know you enjoy even in your darkest times. Price We Pay and Lion King touch on different elements of grief and bereavement but both have a relatable narrative.

XI Records has held a number of fundraising events including Bask in the Sun in summer 2023 Stockport. This was a day of live music performed by grassroots artists from across Manchester with fun fundraisers throughout the day including raffles, guess how many sweets in the jar and a name the bear competition!

This year we had a 30th birthday celebration for me under the guise of XI Fest, which was similar to Bask in the Sun but this time with a game of SINGO (Song Bingo) in which bingo cards were bought by the audience in support of Child Bereavement UK. The game was based on songs in my headline set.  None of this could have been achieved without the support of Child Bereavement UK and the whole team at XI Records including Sam Taromsari, Lewis Howells, Dave Urwin, Nathan Corbett, Andy Gibbs, Jess Gibbs, Melissa Douglas, Lizzie Parkinson, Jessica Ryan and Angela Messina.

The team at Child Bereavement UK are simply wonderful, they have supported me with regular friendly check-ins and are always happy to answer my questions and listen to my ideas. They also sent out a couple of t-shirts which came in handy for many XI Records appearances.

If you’re thinking of fundraising for Child Bereavement UK, simply reach out to them. Ask them if your fundraising idea is a good one and they’ll help you achieve great things with your event and in turn for the charity.
