What is Battle of the Bakes with Mary Berry?

It is an online baking competition, created by and run by Child Bereavement UK across Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.

When does the competition launch?

Battle of the Bakes with Mary Berry launches on Thursday 1 April. You can enter the competition from now until midnight on 28 April 2021. The Top 10 Bakes will be chosen by Child Bereavement UK’s fundraising team on Thursday 29 April and the public will vote for their Top 3 Bakes from 9am on 30 April until midnight on Sunday 9 May. Mary Berry will choose the winner from the Top 3 Bakes and the winner will be announced on Wednesday 12 May 2021.

Can anyone enter?

This competition is open to UK residents of any age and ability. Child Bereavement UK staff members however cannot enter.

I’m under 18, can I take part?

Yes, but please make sure you have permission from your parent/guardian to do so first.

Can I create my baked item with a friend/family member(s)?

Of course. However, if you win the competition, you will need to decide how to split the prizes.

Is it free to take part?

Child Bereavement UK is a charity that supports bereaved children and families and we receive no guaranteed statutory funding. We are therefore suggesting a donation of £5 be made per bake to enter the competition. During the public vote, people will need to make a donation of £5 per vote to decide the Top 3 Bakes.

If you would prefer not to make a donation, you can enter the competition free of charge by emailing a photo of your BEST BAKE to [email protected]

Can I enter more than once?

You are welcome to enter multiple bakes, but we would like to suggest each entry be accompanied by a £5 donation.

How do I enter my Bake into the competition?

To make a suggested donation of £5 to Child Bereavement UK please text BestBake to 70085. Take a screenshot of your donation. By midnight on Wednesday 28 April, on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter, upload a photo of your best bake together with the screenshot of your donation. Tag Child Bereavement UK and use the hashtag #BattleOfTheBakes

Can I donate more than £5?

To make a donation, you must do so via our Text to Donate number, 70085. Via this method you will be unable to donate more than £5. However, if you would like to make an additional donation, you can do so here: Donate Please note, making an additional donation will not improve your chance of winning the competition.

How do I take a screenshot of my donation?

If you’re using an iPhone you can take a photo of your screen by holding the home and lock button at the same time. Alternatively you could take a photo of your screen using another phone or camera, but please make sure the entire message is visible and the photo is clear.

Do I have to tag you on all social media platforms to enter?

No, just one and you can choose from Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.

I don’t use social media. Can I email/post my entry instead?

This is an online competition and we therefore encourage people to enter by tagging Child Bereavement UK on Facebook, Instagram or Twitter. Maybe someone you know who does use social media could upload your photo on your behalf. If this is not possible, you can send us a photo of your Best Bake to [email protected]

Are there different categories for different ages/abilities?

No. Entries will be judged on a range of criteria. There is therefore no need to have separate categories.

Does my entry need to be cake related?

Not at all. Crumpets, doughnuts, pastries or pies; any baked goods can be entered into Battle of the Bakes with Mary Berry.

How will the winner be selected?

Our fundraising team will judge all entries based on general appearance, originality, creativity, skill and technique and will select the Top 10. A public vote will then determine the Top 3. Mary Berry will then select the winner, judging them by the same criteria. As this is an online competition, it will not be possible to taste entries.

I’m not great at baking. Can I buy something from a shop and decorate it myself?

We ask that your entry has been baked, created and decorated by you. All entries will be judged on general appearance, originality, creativity, skill and technique so it’s not about being perfect. Just give it a go and have fun!

Do I need to have baked my entry item during the competition?

No, your baked item could be something you created previously.

How will I know if my bake is chosen as one of the Top 10 Bakes and goes through to the public vote?

We will announce it on social media and send you a direct message on whichever social media platform you used to enter the competition.

How will the public vote?

From 9am on Friday 30 April – midnight on Sunday 9 May, members of the public will be able to text 1BestBake, 2BestBake, 3BestBake etc to 70085, donating £5, ultimately voting for their favourite Bake.

If my entry gets through to the Top 10 Bakes, can my friends and family vote for me?

Of course. The fundraising team will provide you with materials that you can use to encourage your friends and family to vote for you.

If my entry gets through to the Top 10 Bakes, can I vote for myself?

Every £5 donation/vote made during the voting stage of the competition, made via our Text to Donate number will be counted, regardless of who made the donation.

How will I know if my bake is chosen as one of the Top 3 Bakes and goes through to the final round of judging?

We will announce it on social media and send you a direct message on whichever social media platform you used to enter the competition.

Is there a prize for 2nd and 3rd place?
