This course explores the impact of grief and bereavement in schools, nurseries, colleges, and other educational settings. Focusing on the important role of a school when managing bereavement, you will be guided through how to develop a bereavement-aware culture within your setting, and the resources needed to create your own ‘bereavement tool-kit’.

Who should attend?

Suitable for professionals working in schools or early years settings, including: teachers and teaching assistants; keyworkers and members of a welfare or pastoral support team; SENCo; and others directly supporting bereaved young people as well as senior leaders, governors and policy makers.

Learning outcomes

You will:

  • Develop an understanding of the impact of loss and grief on children and young people's physical and emotional health, including their learning.
  • Gain insight into children and young people's reactions to loss and grief, and how a school might respond to meet the needs of grieving pupils.
  • Consider strategies for pastoral support appropriate to the age and developmental stage of the pupils.
  • Recognise the importance of creating a bereavement-aware culture within school, and the implementation of a robust bereavement policy or charter.
  • Explore a range of resources and support information to establish a ‘bereavement tool kit’ for your school/setting.
  • Gain information about Child Bereavement UK and other support organisations and resources available.

Cost: £45

We encourage prospective participants to consider their own experience of loss and how it might affect them during training. Our training is not usually suited to anyone who has suffered a recent, significant personal loss or bereavement.
